The Colour of Grief

If grief had a colour, what would it be?

Today, a year ago, we lost my nephew in a tragic car crash. After lighting a candle in his memory, I sat my desk and created.

If the colour of grief is black, then I’d like to throw some colour around it. Despite the tragedy, life is filled with heartwarming memories, beautiful photographs, magical sunrises and glorious sunsets that remind us that the people we love never really die.

Using Ranger’s Adirondack Brights, a distressed sprayed die cut and an Illustrated Faith sentiment, I created this card.

This card reminded me that despite grief, love is powerful and families are eternal.

Thank you for reading. Until next time, learn new things and if you can be anything, choose to be a kind human being.

Reminder: You’re beautiful

Hey, did I tell you how terrified I was of stamping? I was! I could never direct stamp onto any of my projects. I would always mess up and waste a lot of my products! So to play it safe, I’d stamp on a separate piece of cardstock or use printed sentiments.

On my first trip to India in December 2016, I got to shop at Die Cuts and More and the talented Mansi Gupta Sharma who owns it, sold me the Stampoholic tool.

For the first time ever, I got perfectly stamped images and sentiments and I could stamp directly onto my cards! It took my stamping to a whole new level.

Last night, I decided to step out of my safe craft zone and do a one layer card.

Using my favourite stamps and distress inks I created this beautiful one layer card.

The distress inks helped me to create the water colour background and I found the perfect round brush to create the splatters.

I used a sentiment stamp from Kaisercraft. I stamped a butterfly directly onto the card and on a separate sheet. I fussy cut the second butterfly and adhered it with foam tape over the first butterfly for dimension. (I was feeling very clever.)

I dried the card using my heat gun and (insert happy dance here) my card was finished. This really was a no fuss card.

Texture Paste Gone Wrong

I am still mastering the art of working with texture paste and I’m pretty good at messing it up! This is one perfect example!

I mixed the acrylic texture paste with some Black All Purpose Ink and using a stencil, I lathered some of the paste, wait, no. I lathered all of the paste and off course, scrapped it all off! After a few attempts, I got some texture paste on and gently raised the stencil to avoid smudges. Guess what? It still smudged!

This card sat on my table for two days and tonight I die cut a cute paper doily, a butterfly, a circle and some pretty flowers.

Using my Zig Clean Brush Markers I coloured the flowers and the circle. I spent at least 20 minutes looking at four flowers and two leaves! I had no idea how to cluster them but eventually it came together!

The rest was a pretty simple assembly. Once I was done I looked at it and thought that it could take some splatters of ink and some water colour!

And after going crazy with colour, I had the finish product.

I’ve learnt that while there are some techniques in card making, a flawed card can still be a beautiful card.

Until next time, learn new things and if you can be anything, choose to be a kind human.

Fabulous FabScraps Friday

On Friday, 7 July 2017, South Africa’s largest scrapbooking and quilting craft company, FabScraps launched their brand spanking new craft room and two of their latest collections.

Joined by a handful of local retailers, Andrea, FabScraps Digital Manager and Caitlin, FabScraps International Business and Logistics Manager introduced the Wild Beauty and Jingle All The Way collections.

The Wild Beauty collection is playful with a mix of beautiful sentiments and breathtaking water effects, while the Jingle All The Way collection is a contemporary Christmas collection like never seen before.

Wild Beauty

Jingle All The Way

FabScraps’ high quality paper is archival ink safe, acid and lignin free. The chipboard embellishments used to be cut from grey board, however, the team will now cut embellishments from a new type of board called beer board. This board will hold true colour so much easier. Each collection is flanked by high quality stencils, chipboard embellishments, a chipboard album and my favourite: a Carders Pack.  The Carders Pack consists of 24 6×6 double sided paper and die cut embellishments. Thank you FabScraps for thinking of the card makers too!

Be on the look out for the Lazy 8 cards, a collection of mini cards and envelopes, for that gift card on the go with gorgeous patterned envelopes and plain cardstock. While you are on gift cards, stock up on the coordinating gift tags and ribbon!

Lazy 8 Cards

The introduction of cupcake holders with cupcake topper stencils left retailers in amazement! Those mini stencils are so versatile, you can use them for paper crafts and/or in the kitchen!

The FabScraps Craft Room is a beautiful spacious area, with decorative walls hand-painted by Brigitte Wimbush, the FabScraps CEO and shelves of jaw dropping, heart racing, blood pumping craft goodies from craft heaven.

Most of the projects displayed in their craft room were designed by the talented Tanya Cloete, a design team member. Trisha Naicker and Brigitte Wimbush are the head designers over at FabScraps. Trisha Naicker, who was employed as a textile designer has already designed two paper collections, which has sold out both locally and internationally. Check out her collections, Woodland’s Friends and Study Buddies, here.

If you are hosting a craft event why don’t you get in touch with the team over at FabScraps and book the prettiest craft room in town – they are situated out in Hillcrest, but it is definitely worth the drive.

Thank you FabScraps for a lovely morning with delicious sweet treats.

Until next time, learn new things and if you can be anything, choose to be a kind human!

#BlogHop: Chasing Rainbows #1

Hey everyone,

I’m so excited to participate in my first ever blog hop, Chasing Rainbows.

Inspired by my love for paper crafting, I call this card, The colour of love.

Mixing texture paste with black ink, I stenciled the background of my card. While drying, I used Ranger Distress Inks to water colour my card topper, with Stazon Black Ink I stamped the word love, then using the coordinating dies, I cut out the letters. With foam circles, I propped up the letters onto the water coloured card topper.

I used matching rhinestones to finish off the card topper before matting the piece onto silver glitter paper. Using thick foam tape to create some dimension, I adhered the card topper onto the dried textured background.

Here’s the colour of love:

Eight talented ladies and I are participating and I invite you to hop along to each blog, linked below and share some love. You could win awesome craft treats along the way. Be sure to come back to my blog and tell me what you loved about each card and you could win an awesome prize from me!
